Highlights of our activities from 1998 until now…
1998 — Friends of Placer County Animal Shelter
In 1998, Friends of Placer County Animal Shelter (also known as Friends of Auburn/Tahoe Vista Placer County Animal Shelter) was created to assist Placer County Animal Services find homes for shelter animals and provide resources where the County’s funding fell short of necessities such as vaccines, medical supplies, veterinary care, equipment, etc. Most importantly, we created a foster program to care for animals at risk of euthanasia because of treatable illness or lack of space.
2000-2011 — The Cat House

Our flagship program was called The Cat House where we operated a cat shelter and adoption center.
During these years, our contributions to Placer County Animal Shelter included:
- Operating a six-hundred square foot Animal Medical Trailer, complete with surgery room, diagnostic equipment and recovery room.
- Commercial dishwasher
- Holding kennels for processing dogs at intake.
- Retrofitted kennel doors on dog runs
- Animal grooming equipment
- Hand painted wall murals
- Start-up costs to originate a microchip identification program for animals adopted at Placer County Animal Services.
- 2000-2005, operated the County’s weekly off-site mobile adoption program.
- Administered county’s spay/neuter voucher program in 2007 and 2008.
- Reduced euthanasia of adoptable and unadoptable (treatable) animals at the county shelter.
2011 to Present
At the beginning of 2011, FRIENDS relocated to Lincoln Way, Auburn and scaled-down its shelter operations. The volunteers focus on fundraising projects and caring for the abused and neglected animals brought into our program by our sister organization, Humane Society of the Sierra Foothills.
